News from the History Society

By Evie Taylor

I think it’s fair to say that the History Society has got off to a flying start this term! With lots of new faces to welcome, the committee have been busy organising a variety of events to get history students socialising.

Kicking it all off was the Freshers’ Fayre where it was great to see so many of you show an interest in what we offer, a popular question being ‘so what do you actually do?’ We emphasised our focus on day trips, socials, trips abroad, and also pointed to the society’s photo frame which captures its success in previous years. We hoped that we would see many of you at our first social!

The History Society Team

Our first social took place in Park Bar, followed by a trip to Wednesday Union for those who fancied it. An anxious committee arrived at Park Bar, (very much hoping that we weren’t going to be sat there by ourselves), but we were overwhelmed with the turn out which consisted of Freshers, 2nd years, 3rd years and even postgraduates. It was great to meet and chat to everyone whilst bringing together students who were keen to mingle!

At Park Bar

After the success of our first social we were keen to organise another. A few weeks later we met again at Park Bar for a Fancy Dress Frenzy. With no specific theme to adhere to we were really excited to see what you guys would come as, and everyone really did make a fantastic effort. There were all sorts of random characters from a Native American and a hippy, to a bottle of ketchup and a cow! It was great to see people from the first social returning to the history society still eager to socialise and meet even more new people. The party carried on in Sakura VIP and it seemed like everyone had a lot of fun!

At Park Bar for a Fancy Dress Party

Aside from socials, coming up for you guys we have a day trip to Hampton Court at the end of November, (at a very affordable price may I add), where we will explore the impressive royal palace which is home to the beautiful Chapel Royal, William III’s apartments and the only royal chocolate kitchen in Britain (yum!).

Also, due to interest shown by some, we will be trialling a debate group whereby students get together and discuss a certain historical topic. We have arranged for lecturers to get involved with these sessions to really kick-start the argument and get you all thinking!

It’s never too late in the year to come along and be a member of the history society!
